Overview

MicroMentor is an innovative platform designed to address the challenges faced by students, job seekers, and career switchers in finding timely mentorship. As the Lead UX Designer and Researcher, my responsibility was to create a user-friendly interface that enables users to connect with mentors for short, impactful mentorship sessions. The project aims to bridge the gap in traditional mentorship programs by introducing a flexible approach to mentorship that fits users' busy schedules. The need for such a platform is crucial as many individuals seek guidance during critical career transitions.

Problem

Users often face challenges in accessing timely and personalized mentorship, leading to feelings of confusion and lack of support during key transitions.

Solution

We developed a flexible platform that allows users to connect with mentors for short, focused sessions tailored to their specific needs.

Goals

The objective was to create a platform that simplifies the mentorship process while providing meaningful connections. We aimed to address the accessibility and personalization of mentorship for users.

Goal 1

Enable users to book mentorship sessions within minutes.

Goal 2

Facilitate topic-based matching to ensure mentors align with user needs.

User Research

For user research, I conducted a combination of qualitative interviews and survey questionnaires targeting students, job seekers, and individuals exploring a career switch. Initially, I assumed users would prioritize long-term mentorship relationships; however, the research revealed a strong preference for quick, goal-oriented sessions that fit into busy schedules. Many users expressed frustration with traditional mentorship platforms that were either too rigid or lacked relevant matching. This feedback shifted the focus of the product toward short, flexible sessions, topic-based mentor matching, and frictionless scheduling, shaping the core experience of the platform.

Finding 1

Users often lack access to timely mentorship when they need it most.

Many expressed frustration with long wait times for traditional mentorship programs. This encourages us to streamline the onboarding process and reduce barriers to entry so users can book their first session within minutes.

Finding 2

Many users struggled to find mentors relevant to their specific goals.

We’ll prioritize topic-based matching in the design to ensure users can quickly connect with mentors who meet their immediate needs.

Finding 3

Users felt overwhelmed by long-term mentorship commitments.

This insight will guide us to design a lightweight, session-based system that emphasizes quick wins and flexibility over extended mentoring relationships.

Personas

Based on insights from our interviews, I developed user personas representing key segments of our target audience. Each persona illustrated distinct characteristics, motivations, and challenges that users face when seeking mentorship. These personas helped guide design decisions, ensuring that the platform caters to the specific needs of each user type, whether they are students, job seekers, or career switchers.

Customer Journey

The customer journey mapped the end-to-end experience of users seeking mentorship. Key moments include users discovering the platform, searching for mentors, booking sessions, and engaging in video calls. Pain points identified during this journey highlighted areas for improvement, such as enhancing the discovery process and ensuring a smooth scheduling experience.

User Journey

The user journey outlined the steps taken from the moment users land on the platform to completing their mentorship session. Key moments include onboarding, mentor selection, scheduling, and the session itself. Identifying challenges like confusing navigation or difficulties with scheduling helped to pinpoint opportunities for improving the overall user experience.

Sketches

Sketching played a vital role in the ideation phase, allowing me to explore various layout options and design concepts. Rapid sketches helped visualize the mentor search and scheduling processes. This iterative approach ensured that design ideas were grounded in user needs and paved the way for more refined wireframes.

Wireframes

The wireframing process transformed initial sketches into structured layouts that served as the foundation for the final design. These wireframes focused on key functionalities such as the mentor scheduling interface. The goal was to create an intuitive user flow that would guide users effortlessly through the mentorship process.

UI Design

The final UI decisions emphasized a clean and intuitive design that aligns with the brand's mission to connect individuals. By using inviting colors and clear typography, the interface enhances usability and supports the platform's goal of making mentorship accessible. The design effectively addresses user pain points by providing straightforward navigation and easy access to mentorship sessions.

Usability Testing

The usability testing process involved inviting 10 users from our target audience to interact with the prototype. We observed their interactions while they attempted to book mentorship sessions, noting any challenges they faced. Key findings revealed areas for enhancement, particularly in the scheduling process and overall navigation.

Problem

Users struggled with the complexity of scheduling, leading to confusion.

Solution

Simplified the scheduling interface to provide users with clearer options and guidance.

Learnings:

  • On-Demand Access Drives Engagement – Users highly value having mentorship available when they need it most, confirming that real-time or flexible scheduling is a core differentiator.

  • Goal-Relevant Matching Increases Satisfaction – Matching based on specific goals and backgrounds directly improved user confidence in the platform’s value.

  • Short-Term Commitments Reduce Drop-Off – Offering micro-mentorship sessions lowered the barrier to entry and reduced the overwhelm associated with traditional long-term mentorships.

Next Steps:

  • Pilot Launch & Feedback Loop – Release the app to a small user group, track usage metrics, and gather structured feedback to refine the experience.

  • Enhance Matching Algorithm – Incorporate more nuanced criteria such as personality traits, availability, and industry niche to improve mentor-mentee compatibility.

  • Create Simple Follow-Up Tools – Add quick post-session surveys and automated follow-up messages to maintain engagement and collect actionable insights without heavy development effort.
