EasiMart: Simplifying Grocery Shopping Experience

Created an intuitive app to enhance the grocery shopping journey

Overview

EasiMart is a grocery shopping app designed to help users locate products in their local grocery stores efficiently. My role as the lead UX designer involved conducting user research, defining user personas, and crafting wireframes that prioritize user experience. This project is vital as it addresses the common frustrations shoppers face in large grocery environments, ultimately enhancing their shopping experience. Join me as I share the journey of bringing EasiMart from concept to reality.

Problem

Our users are grocery shoppers who need to easily and time-effectively find the products they are looking for while in-store shopping so they can save time and enjoy the products they need.

Solution

We developed an app that combines a search tool with an interactive store map, guiding shoppers directly to the products they need.

Our grocery store app will let users find the products they are looking for at the store which will benefit grocery store shoppers by letting them save time and easily find the products they need.

User Research

For our grocery store app, we began with the assumption that users primarily struggled with locating specific products due to poor in-store signage. To validate this, we conducted user interviews and in-store observational research with a diverse group of shoppers. Through our research, we discovered that while signage was a concern, the bigger challenge was inefficient store layouts and lack of real-time product availability. Many users also wanted to plan their trips in advance to save time. These insights shifted our focus toward features like in-app product mapping, live inventory updates, and optimized shopping routes to help users find items faster and make their grocery trips more efficient.

Finding 1

Many users expressed frustration with the time spent searching for products in-store.

Users struggle to find specific items due to inconsistent signage and varying store layouts. This leads to wasted time and frustration.

Finding 2

There is a lack of real-time product availability.

Shoppers often find items out of stock once they arrive, with no way to check availability in advance. This causes inconvenience and inefficient trips.

Finding 3

Shoppers indicated a strong desire for efficient in-store shopping routes.

Without a guided route, users waste time backtracking through aisles. This makes shopping slower and more tiring.

Personas

Through research findings, I developed user personas that reflected the diverse needs of grocery shoppers. These personas included individuals with varying shopping habits, preferences, and technological proficiency. Each persona was crafted to highlight common characteristics such as motivations to save time, the need for convenience, and the desire for a more pleasant shopping experience, guiding our design choices throughout the project.

Customer Journey

The customer journey began with users planning their grocery lists at home, followed by navigating to the store. Key moments included searching for products, locating them on the map, and checking out. Pain points arose when items were hard to find, causing frustration and potential abandonment of the shopping trip. Our aim was to smooth these transitions and enhance the overall experience through the app.

User Journey

The user journey with EasiMart starts when shoppers open the app to search for items on their grocery list. They can view the store map to find the quickest route to each product. Challenges arose during navigation, particularly when users faced unclear markings or missed items. By addressing these issues, we aimed to create a more intuitive journey that would allow users to shop quickly and efficiently.

Sketches

Sketches played a crucial role during the ideation phase, allowing me to brainstorm various layout options and design concepts. By quickly iterating on ideas, I explored different ways to present the store map and search functionality. This process helped visualize my thoughts and facilitated the flow of ideas, leading to more refined concepts that aligned with user needs.

Wireframes

The wireframing process focused on translating our initial sketches into structured layouts that outlined the user interface's flow. We prioritized key features like the search bar and product location indicators. Feedback from stakeholders helped refine these wireframes, ensuring they met both user expectations and business goals, laying a solid foundation for the final design.

UI Design

The final UI decisions emphasized clarity and ease of use, with a clean layout that aligns with EasiMart's brand. Colors and typography were chosen to enhance readability and make navigation intuitive. The design addressed the initial problems of confusion and frustration by presenting information clearly, ensuring users can find what they need with minimal effort.

Usability Testing

We conducted usability studies to evaluate how effectively users could navigate the grocery store app to find specific products in-store. A total of 6 participants were asked to search for an item, locate it using the in-app map, and add it to their grocery list.

Problem 1

Users struggled with the clarity of the map's product indicators.

Solution 1

We enhanced map visuals by adding color coding and clearer labels for product locations.

Learnings:

Throughout this project, I learned the importance of grounding design decisions in real user feedback and testing. Iterating on the interface based on usability studies helped me see how small changes—like visual clarity or button placement—can significantly improve the user experience. I also gained a deeper understanding of accessibility, user flow, and the value of designing with both functionality and clarity in mind.
